TEACHERS DAY

PUP ProfessorsEdward Gonzales, Elizabeth Santos and Val Cabañero - college professors who helped me and the whole of my class polish our capabilities and blessed us with the knowledge of the (advertising and public relations) industry in the aim to fully equip us with the soul and substance of a real creative prodigy. (Whoa! What was that again?) Please disregard the graphic fact that April was with each one of them. I regret the idea that I never had the chance to take a pose with these professors. Oh well, there’s always a next time. To my most favored college professors, maraming salamat po! (Thank you very much!)

It is indeed the time to pay our gratitude to our dear mentor as we all commemorate this day made especially for them- “Happy Teachers day” to you if you are a teacher reading this right now. I have to say that the skills I have right now were polished by the institutions that we all know as schools or universities. We all know that it’s such a noble job to be employed as a teacher. In choosing this profession, one has to be inspired by the duty and responsibility because it is not a high profiled field. This makes it more humbling to experience their talent knowing how selfless they are. I feel blessed being educated by my teachers from pre-school to college and I need not drop a tear to express it.

To end this, I would like to thank my elementary mentor in journalism, Ms Helen Flores. Thanks to her, for guiding me through in articulating my thoughts and helping me grow the appreciation for current events and the society. I hope she’s doing well right now.

Advertising and Public Relations

The title is also the Bachelors degree I graduated with at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines. I feel like I was really meant to be part of this college. When my freshman days started, I realized that I can be creative and articulate only if I will really get into it. I don’t know, but they say that the gift of communications skill is something really wonderful. In my case, I just feel like this is the only thing I know of. This is the only job I can do. To tell you a brief story of how I got into this course, is like summarizing it into three words-Test of Character.

I did not finish my entrance exam in PUP. I thought that my parents would send me somewhere else. Then I received this letter from the university saying that I passed the exams and was scheduled for the day 5 enrollments. Day 5? - This is the last day so it practically means that all shining shimmering courses are taken. Oh well, I was planning to take up Mass Com. I was thinking that maybe few people of my generation would want to do broadcasting jobs. I was wrong. I am left on the waiting list prepared just in case some colleges open. College of Business opened with 3 courses-Management, Marketing and Advertising and PR. Each course got 100 enrollees and I was not even chosen. My sister inquired about the basis of selection and was told that they scanned high school report cards. She insisted that my grades are impressive enough which convinced this one chairperson. There I was happy that I got in as one of the freshmen of Advertising and PR course!

I am now a proud graduate. I am now working in one of the fierce advertising agency on a local base. One thing just makes me wonder- how people perceive my Bachelors degree. When friends and relatives ask about the course I graduated with, I always get two reactions after I answer- a blank face or a “wow!”. I wouldn’t really give it a big deal, but I can’t help but wonder what’s up with the reaction. Whatever it is, I’m happy with the industry I belong with right now. Imagine, a world without advertisements? People will be left with slim choices for products and services and worst, streets will be dull and peaceful in a bad taste. =)

Adidas: Blue or Green?

Sa Pula, sa Puti! Or shall we shout: To the blue! To the green!

The hot season of UAAP always conjures back the rivalry between Ateneo de Manila’ Blue Eagles and their tight opponent De la Salle University’s Green Archers. This match breaks attendance records in Araneta Coliseum. It brings all of the most powerful and wealthy people in the country. The animosity goes way beyond the colors and level of who dishes out better quality of education. The competition goes way beyond the four walls of these two educational institutions. It has been a mark or shall I say a part of Pop culture.

Premier sports brand Adidas saw a great marketing potential within this rivalry. Adidas first forged a co-brand for Ateneo. The ADMU Adidas merchandise soared high and brought in substantial sales. This prompted Adidas to test the tides with the Ateneo rival. Now, Adidas concept stores carrying opposing window displays of Ateneo and La Salle sports merchandise are seen in Trinoma, Greenhills, Rockwell, Alabang town Center, Festival Mall and Mega mall. The individual co-brand collections are composed of varsity jackets, shirts, graphic tees and to fore front it all, basketball shoes are also produced.

Because high profiled people are the prodigies of these two universities, it is quite understandable just how hardcore the rivalry is. The battle between Blue and Green will continue to endure for as long as we believe in healthy competition. So, which class do you belong to: The tagged “geeks and geniuses” of the eagles? Or the so-called “leaders” of the archers? Maybe you’re one of the “Skolar ng Bayan!” Ha Ha Ha. Where did that come from?

Experience Trolley

I remember this one time back in college. We were tasked to perform a play for our Humanities class. One thing that’s lame about it is that we were given one week to prepare for it. So, we resorted to staying in this house of July, one of our group mates. Her house is somewhat situated in the side train railings. This means feeling the grounds shaking every time the train passes by while were still snoozing away.
PUP is just near the train railings. This prompted us to take the famous “trolley” on our way to school. Trolley is a kind of ride that primarily runs through the train railings. The small vehicle is run by pure human strength so it is very friendly in this time of gasoline issues.
We stayed at July’s place for quite a while up until we finished our presentation. It was quite a thrill living with my group mates for a while. It was more fun to ride the trolley though. There are some “life threatening” zones in the so called “stations” of the trolley like the bridge in Pandacan area. There are some instances when trolley rides should be stopped because a train is fast approaching. Whoa! Talk about some life on the cutting edge.

After our satisfactory presentation for the subject; it’s time to pack our bags and bid goodbye to July’s super nice family. It’s also time to bid goodbye to the daily trolley rides. Recalling our presentation, I would like to apologize again to our technical director that time for my strong shout when the dubbing went flat. Sorry Airene! It’s not easy joggling the roles of a director and lead actor at the same time, so I hope you understand.
Its been a while since I last ride the trolley. Tara samahan mo ko , sakay tayo!

UP Padyak!

Before anything else, I have to clear it out that I was never a student of UP. I tried taking an exam there and got in. The only glitch though is that I passed in UP Baguio, and I was a little sceptical that time thinking that I am not yet ready to live alone. Oh well, until now I still live with my mom. Now going back, we are all aware that UP Diliman is really big. The entire university can only be explored through the aid of UP ikot jeepneys. Students who have classes from buildings to buildings which are a little far from each other need to ride these jeepneys. Great news for all UP students – as an addition to the already significant celebration of the UP Centennial, UP Mountaineers and other Alumni launched the UP Padyak Project. The project aims to help students become more mobile in travelling within UP premises. The colorful bikes add up to the real sincere and happy aim of the project. The people behind the project aim to keep it private as they try to defy any sponsorship deals from outsiders. I find this idea really cool and beneficial. It makes me want to go back in college and enrol myself in UP. Well, maybe MA degree there is quite feasible. J

Kudos to all UP geniuses and creative minds! Happy 100 years guys!

hyperventilate ka kapag sumakay ka
dito. ayos ang tugtugan dito kasi
latest hits, wag ka lang mamalasin na
masakay dun sa mga april boy fan na

kapag late and in a hurry ka nang
pasaway ka for your class! just dont
forget to take one good grip at the
safety hand rails.

2. Humihingi ka ng fare discount kahit

3. Fanatic ka ng chuck taylor. at
kadalasan first

-class immitation lang(
eh gipit eh, bakit ba?!) ganunpaman,
sosya l mo itong nadadala at nairarampa
sa catwalk at theresa street. Gustong-
gusto mong kumakapal ang surface ng
shoes mo sa dumi dahil mas "cool" and
rugged looking. at trip mo din ang
alternation ng colors for your sintas.

4. Madalas eh naka flip flops ka lang
sa pagpasok.

-Havaianas pa yan peke
naman! pero syempre buong tikas mong
ilalakad ang bagong spa( babad sa
mertayolet)mong mga paa. mabuhay ang
mga kalyo mong huggard na.

5. Kung girl ka, mahilig kang mag
spaghetti strap.

-kahit bawal naman ang spaghetti strap
ngaun sa pup, magpupumilit ka!
lalandiin mo ang guard para makapasok
or magdadala ka ng coat or jacket para
magkunwaring conservative ka! hmmm
kalandi!

6. Isusuot mo ang id mo sa entrance and
immediately after your entry, huhubarin
mo din ito. para bang hiyang hiya ka
sa id mo eh hello? skul kaya yun!
masagwa ba mag id sa skul? hay!

7. ang normal meal mo for the day ay
siomai + iced tea. you can buy this
comvo anywhere. at tatanungin ka pa
kung with chili or without.

8. madalas kang tambay ng sit-in at
friendster at ym ang nasa screen mo.,
tuwang tuwa ka pag na cancel ang klase
kase makakapagbabad ka nanaman sa shop
at ma a upgrade mo nanaman ang social
life mo thru the web!

dalang tray of goodies such as
susnshine, sampaloc, and hopya of all
flavors! na miss mo sya nung minsang
nag leave sya at nagtyaga ka s a cold
and filthy foods as canteen sa 4th
floor. well, long live manang manilyn!

there you go, sampu pa lang yan. kung
taga pup ka at may gusto kang idagdag,
message mo na sken at together lets
mock oh i mean hail the ingenuity and
uniqueness of us, pupians!

cheers! kampay!
