It is the first time that Philippines joined the Earth Hour campaign. It was in deed a success because the whole Metro almost turned dark as concerned people showed their gesture of care for the environment by turning off electricity from 8PM to 9PM last March 29, 2008. Many establishments also joined the movement and the most notable among them is SM Malls which turned off their electricity in all of their 30 branches all over the nation. Many would say that an hour without electricity is not enough to conserve energy but we should realize that the primal aim of this campaign is to grow some concern out of people and eventually drive positive responses out of them.
The participation of the Philippines could have been greater if MERALCO participated in a significant way by turning off their facilities for an hour. It wouldn’t hurt to lose a little earning if it’s worth saving our home, right? But then again the participation of very normal households ( like ours) can create an immense amount of effect.
